Founded on March 28, 2014, the CAM–SU Genomic Resource Center (CAM-SU GRC) is a joint research center between the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Soochow University. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI), as a centre-stage, world leader in genome research, with completions of human genome sequence project, developed a mouse mutant ES cell repository with an internationally coordinated effort and the funding from the National Institutes of Health (USA) and the European Union (EU). This genetic resource is globally used by many scientific communities and is the initiation point for several large organized programs directed at annotating the function of the majority of mouse genes, under the auspices of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC). These studies will help to understand gene functions in development, physiology and pathology, as well as their potential contributions in human diseases and pharmaceutical industry.
WTSI recognized that distribution of cell resources to Asia, particularly China, was a major problem. To better facilitate the distribution of these resources in Asia scientific community, the Cambridge-Suda Genomic Resource Center (CAM-SU GRC) was founded in 2014 as a collaborative center between WTSI and Soochow University. A physical copy of this resource of nearly half a million vials of ES cells covering more than 8000 genes was transferred to the Soochow University in April, 2015.
Quite a few scientists benefited immediately after the establishment of this new center in a timely and economical manner. CAM-SU GRC has distributed 90 ES clones covering 36 genes to over 19 investigators in Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Wuhan and other cities in China. CAM-SU GRC already has the capacity of technique, knowledge and facilities for IMPC membership, and will extend its services to other Asian countries, including Japan, Singapore and Australia and Western countries. CAM-SU GRC will make effort to help scientists in China and other countries to access this resource for their research and make it as one of the best successful stories of international collaboration in science, industry and economics.
